At
Ballard Farmers' Market in Seattle last weekend, passersby could be forgiven
for thinking that John Morefield was running for political office. Laughing,
yelling, and greeting everyone who stood up was the image of friendship. All he
needed were campaign labels and buttons.
Of
course, Morefield, 29, is not a politician, but an architect looking for work.
He was sitting on the wooden support of a house under a sign that said
"Architecture 5 ¢", with a can nearby waiting for more changes. For
nickel, I would answer any architectural question.
In
2008, Morefield lost his job, twice, and thought he could get out of the
recession doing design work for friends and family, only when the jobs sold
out. that is, it established its position. As someone in her 20s with few
connections or a large portfolio, she thought it would be easier for her to
find clients on her own.
"I
didn't know what I was going to do," Morefield said. "I had no
choice. The recession hit the minutes hard and I had to do this job."
