Connecting to a wired network
To connect to a wired network, connect one end of an Ethernet
cable to the computer's Ethernet port and the other end to an Ethernet port on
a switch, router, or hub.
For many networks, making the physical connection is all you
need to do, because Windows tries to automatically configure the connection
when it detects the cable. If the network uses DHCP (see the sidebar nearby),
Windows can apply the appropriate settings and the computer can start using the
network.
Windows doesn't display any pop-up windows or dialog boxes
when it successfully connects to a network, so you'll probably want to verify
that the connection is working. Usually, the easiest way is to open a web
browser, such as Microsoft Edge; if it shows your home page, everything is
fine; but if you get an error, you will need to set up the connection.
See the “Manually Configuring IP Settings” section later in
this chapter for instructions on manually configuring a wired connection.
